CAPOEIRA IS EVERYTHING THE MOUTH EATS - 137 Years of Mestre Pastinha

This month, the global Capoeira community pauses to honor the birth of Vicente Ferreira Pastinha, universally known as Mestre Pastinha. Born 137 years ago, he remains the eternal "Philosopher of Capoeira"—the man who shielded the soul of the Angola style when the world tried to dilute it.

Mestre Pastinha didn’t just teach a martial art; he taught a way of being. For him, Capoeira was "everything the mouth eats," a holistic expression of freedom, cunning (mandinga), and African heritage.

Abandoned in poverty

While we celebrate his birth, we must also reflect on the somber reality of his departure. Mestre Pastinha passed away on November 13, 1981, at the age of 92. His final days were spent in the Dom Pedro II shelter in Salvador, Bahia.

After suffering two consecutive strokes, the master who once moved with the grace of a panther was left blind and paralyzed. His death serves as a haunting reminder of the historical neglect faced by the guardians of Afro-Brazilian culture. Despite defining Brazil’s national identity, he left this world in poverty and isolation.

"I live in the hope of leaving a beautiful school of Capoeira Angola to the world." — Mestre Pastinha

Caxixi Store is Returning the Economy to the Roots

The Caxixi Store was born from a visceral desire to break this cycle of neglect. We believe that if Capoeira is a treasure for the world, the people who create its tools and preserve its rhythms should not live in want.

Our mission is simple: Honor the Mestres and Artisans of Bahia.

  • Fair Trade: We pay our artisans fairly, ensuring the majority of profits return to those who keep the craft alive.

  • Sustainable Legacy: We recognize that while Capoeira is a spiritual and cultural force, the economy must support the people behind the art.

Featured: The Angola Pastinha Signature Set

To celebrate this 137-year legacy, we are proud to promote the Angola Pastinha Signature Set.

This set is handcrafted by Valmir, our oldest artisan and a dedicated Angoleiro himself. Every curve of the berimbau and every weave of the caxixi is a tribute to the tradition Pastinha fought to save. When you choose this set, you aren't just buying an instrument—you are directly supporting the livelihood of a Bahian artisan.

Mestre Pastinha protected the philosophy; now, it is our turn to protect the practitioners. By choosing ethical, artisan-made instruments, we ensure that the "Philosophers of Capoeira" today don't face the same abandonment Pastinha did.

Keep the legacy alive. Play with purpose.
